Young Carers

What is a Young Carer?

A Young Carer is someone who takes on a level of responsibility to look after a sibling, parent or relative before, during or after school. Their responsibilities for caring might continue into the evenings, weekends and holidays.

Statistics suggest that 1 in 12 students under the age of 18yrs could be a Young Carer. Many Young Carers are unaware there is a wealth of advice and support that they can access, in and out of school.

Caring for loved ones can be a very rewarding part of a Young Carer’s life. However, caring can also potentially hinder academic and social progress and, unless supported in and out of school, can lead to feelings of being overwhelmed academically as well as being emotionally and physically drained. Redborne’s Young Carers group aims to help students to find a healthy balance between caring and school work, building a happier individual who feels supported by a network of other Young Carers and staff.

Redborne’s Young Carers:

  • Meet on a regular basis in a calm, informal and quiet setting
  • Support each other by sharing issues and ideas
  • Have access to support from Redborne staff as well as other agencies
  • Is for any Young Carer at Redborne, whether they are registered as a YC or not
  • Is an inclusive and friendly group

If you think your son/daughter is a Young Carer, please contact Mr A. Francis (Redborne’s Young Carers Coordinator) at for more information and details about how your son/daughter can join the Young Carers group.
