Local Further Education Providers

Further Education Colleges offer a wide range of programmes to study, both vocational and academic. Some specialise in particular industry sectors such as art and design, catering, engineering or finance.  FE colleges often have links with companies, so that students studying vocational courses can combine classroom learning with valuable work experience.

Qualifications are usually taken over two years by students aged 16–19.

If you want to build expertise and up-to-date skills to help develop your career in a specific industry, you might choose a vocational or professional qualification. These can also prepare you to study an industry-based subject through to Higher Education.

Vocational and professional qualifications are offered at many levels. They combine classroom-based learning and independent study with practical training, and include:

Further Education and Work Experience

Many of the courses include a work placement – a period of time spent gaining experience in a real workplace. The aim is to introduce you to the world of work and give you valuable experience in your chosen profession. T levels include 'on-the-job’ experience during an industry placement of at least 315 hours (approximately 45 days).

Entry Qualifications

The entry requirements will depend on the course you are interested in applying for.  The higher the level the more qualifications needed.  Each course will outline their entry requirements in the college prospectus.   These are available either on the college websites (see below) and some are available from our Careers Library.

English Language and Maths GCSE – If you do not gain a grade 4 in these subjects you will have to retake them or study for an equivalent qualification at college.
