Maths Faculty

In the Mathematics Faculty we have 15 teaching staff and 3 support staff. The faculty contains the mathematics department and the ICT department.

The Mathematics staff consists of 10 specialist maths teachers (including an AST) and 2 curriculum assistants.

In Year 9 we prepare students for the GCSE course Teaching is by a variety of methods, formal class teaching, group work, practical work and investigations. Students also start to explore how maths is relevant in everyday context and how it is used in problem solving. Our aim is for students to enjoy maths.

In Years 10 and 11 we follow the linear Edexcel GCSE course. Entry is made at one of two levels: Foundation or Higher. Students are tracked closely throughout the course so that individual learning needs are met and to ensure they reach their potential. Most students sit the GCSE papers at the end of Year 11. Some students will also take a qualification in functional skills. Our results in the last 2 years have been above 81% A*-C. There is also the opportunity for the most able students to sit a Level 2 qualification in Further Maths which introduces some AS material and improves problem solving. 85% of first cohort gained an A* with distinction or an A*.

In the sixth form we prepare students for AS and A level examinations in Mathematics and Further Mathematics. The courses have an emphasis on pure maths and we offer applications modules in statistics, decision maths and mechanics. Students wanting to take maths related degrees are encouraged to sit the extension award paper. We also offer Use of Maths which supports Science, Business and Humanities.

Able students take part in the individual and team intermediate and senior maths challenges every year. Staff are always available to help individuals outside lesson time.
